Given the stated policies of the next administration, we feel called to tighten our network of solidarity with immigrants who will be facing increased vulnerability. What can we expect? Importantly, what can we do?
Our upcoming Community Meeting on Sunday, January 26, at 3:00 on zoom will tackle these questions with the help of Maggie Fogarty of NH AFSC and Joe Schapiro of Keene. Please look for our separate announcement, and join us!
Meanwhile, a group in Keene is making and implementing plans for standing together with our local friends and neighbors. The group includes people who work with, accompany, and celebrate immigrants in our community. Project Home is represented, along with Keene Immigrant and Refugee Partnership (KIRP), the new Intercultural Center, the Keene International Festival, and the Neighborhood Support Teams for refugees in the area.
This small group has already hosted an immigration attorney from Catholic Charities who provided information about the rights of immigrants and others in case they have interactions with ICE or local officers. We have been meeting with local officials such as Mayor Kahn and Police Chief Stewart to discuss how municipal policies can help increase the safety of our immigrant neighbors.
We will schedule a gathering for all who would like to join hands with immigrants and other allies and plan further protective strategies for our vulnerable friends and neighbors. For more information, please reach out to Judy Reed: jureed@keene.edu.
